Welcome to Copenhagen

For WorldPride And EuroGames !

I am immensely thrilled and proud that Copenhagen together with Malmö are hosting the most important LGBTI+ event ever held in Scandinavia – Copenhagen 2021 WorldPride and EuroGames.

During Copenhagen 2021 debates on human rights will prosper, while one of the world’s most inclusive sport events will push the agenda on inclusion forward. Copenhagen 2021 not only celebrates diversity but also paves the way to a more equal world.

For decades we have worked progressively for LGBTI+ rights in Denmark. In 1989 Denmark led the way when the world’s first legally registered same-sex partner-ship was entered at the Copenhagen City Hall. Denmark was also the first country to declassify transgender from the mental illness list, and we were the first to allow legal change of gender without medical approval.

With Copenhagen 2021 we are therefore sending a strong and important message to the rest of the world : Here, you have the right to be who you are, no matter who you love and how you identify yourself. Inclusion is one of the very cornerstones of our city’s DNA. But while there is much to celebrate, we still have further to go. Too many people around the world are still being discriminated against for just being themselves.

Here in Copenhagen we have among other things adopted Denmark’s first LGBTI+ policy on city level to address issues regarding health, well-being, and discrimination against LGBTI+ citizens and employees. We have a common year-round commitment to make sure that everyone feels safe and is treated with respect.

In Copenhagen we are still proud, still celebrating and still pushing.

On behalf of the City of Copenhagen I wish you a happy Copenhagen 2021 and a wonderful stay in our city. Welcome to everyone.
